Narrow-Roll Differential Winding Shaft

Ball Differential Friction Shaft

Ball slip shafts can be configured as center-air, pneumatic side-pressure or mechanical side-pressure structures for flexible narrow-roll winding. Also known as: ball slip shaft, ball friction shaft.

Ball-Type Winding Structure

Controlled torque for flexible narrow-roll winding.

Suitable for narrow-width slitting from 5 mm and for film, paper and label rewinding applications where roll-specific torque compensation is required.

  • Can be built as center-air-pressure, pneumatic side-pressure or mechanical side-pressure slip shafts.
  • The center-air design has low mechanical torque loss and delivers torque in proportion to air pressure.
  • Supports a broad winding tension range according to shaft structure, ring type and air pressure setting.
  • Suitable for rolls as narrow as 5 mm, with roll width selection based on the actual winding layout.
3-inch Ring75.5 mm OD, 78.2 mm maximum expansion
6-inch Ring151 mm OD, 155.5 mm maximum expansion
Core Sizes76.2 +/- 0.2 mm and 152.4 +/- 0.2 mm
WidthsSingle-ball 10-25 mm; double-ball 15-50 mm
Minimum Slitting WidthFrom 5 mm depending on shaft and ring layout

Where a ball differential friction shaft is used

Very narrow slit widths

Slitting from 5 mm width upward, which is the narrowest of the six structures here.

Label and paper rewinding

Roll-specific torque compensation where many narrow rolls are wound across one shaft.

Flexible mounting

Can be built as center-air, pneumatic side-pressure or mechanical side-pressure, so it fits machines that cannot take a center-air shaft.

3-inch and 6-inch cores

Single-ball rings 10–25 mm and double-ball rings 15–50 mm on 3-inch; 30–50 mm on 6-inch.

Slip Ring

Slip ring options and core-contact details

Ball slip rings can be selected according to core size, ring width, ball structure, pressure method and required winding torque.

  • 3-inch ring outside diameter is 75.5 mm and expands to 78.2 mm.
  • Maximum expansion diameter of the steel-ball ring is 78.2 mm.
  • Suitable paper core inner diameter is 76.2 +/- 0.2 mm.
  • Standard 3-inch width is 25 mm; single-ball rings are available in 10, 15, 20 and 25 mm widths.
  • Double-ball rings are available in 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 mm widths.
  • Standard inner diameter is 60 mm.
  • 6-inch ring outside diameter is 151 mm and expands to 155.5 mm; suitable core is 152.4 +/- 0.2 mm.
  • 6-inch standard widths are 35 and 45 mm, with 30, 40 and 50 mm options.

Selection Notes

Confirm core material, core inner diameter, required width, winding tension range, shaft structure and whether the application needs low starting tension or higher roll-holding force.

Technical Reference Data

Pull force and air pressure reference values for preliminary selection.

Reference values should be confirmed according to the actual shaft structure, ring width, groove material, pressure method and air path before final selection.

Pressures are given in kg/cm² as published by the manufacturer. For conversion: 1 kg/cm² = 0.98 bar = 14.2 psi. So 1 kg/cm² ≈ 1 bar, and 5 kg/cm² ≈ 4.9 bar ≈ 71 psi.

How to use these figures: they are reference values for a single ring, measured under the stated test conditions — that ring width, that friction material and that groove. Total winding torque on your machine depends on how many rings are on the shaft, the roll diameter as it builds, the condition of the friction material and the line speed, so these numbers cannot be used directly to calculate web tension. Send us the slit widths, the number of rolls across and the tension range you need, and we will confirm the ring configuration before you size anything.
